THE SNOEK RUN
Returning Factual Series
Every year, sometime around the beginning of winter, something changes along South Africa’s West Coast. The sea gets colder, the weather turns unpredictable, and fishermen start watching for the arrival of snoek.
When the fish move in, the boats go out.
For the fishing communities along the West Coast, the snoek season is part of an annual rhythm that has been repeated for generations. It brings excitement, uncertainty and the possibility of a good season, but it also brings long days at sea, difficult weather and the constant question of whether the fish will be there when the boats arrive.
The fishermen themselves are at the centre of the story. Their knowledge of the sea, their boats, their families and the characters who make up these communities give the series its human heart. Humour, competition, tradition, risk, and plenty of unpredictability fill the pages
.
But the snoek run is about more than catching fish. It is about a way of life that is changing. Younger generations are growing up in a different world; fishing communities are under pressure and traditional knowledge is being lost or altered. At the same time, the arrival of snoek can still bring an entire community to life.
The Snoek Run would follow the season as it unfolds, returning to the West Coast each year and capturing what happens when the fish arrive. Each season brings different weather, different characters and different outcomes.
The format could work as a returning factual series because the story doesn't end when one season finishes. The following year, the boats go out again.
The opportunity is to build a series around a real event that happens every year, with access to strong characters, spectacular locations and a story that naturally creates anticipation and uncertainty.
