THE LAST SNAKE DOCTOR
Documentary Series
There are people who know things that cannot easily be learned from a book.
For generations, knowledge about snakes, their behaviour and traditional ways of dealing with snakebite has been passed from one person to another. It is practical knowledge, learned through experience and often closely connected to the communities and places where these people live, but much of that knowledge is disappearing.
The people who still carry it are getting older, and in many cases, no obvious successor is waiting to learn what they know. Some of these individuals have spent decades dealing with snakes, helping people and learning to understand the animals through experience rather than formal training.
The Last Snake Doctor is a search for these people.
The starting point is the people themselves. Who are they? How did they learn what they know? Where did their knowledge come from, and how has it been passed down? What do they understand about snakes that comes from years of experience in the field?
The search could take us into rural communities, farms, villages and remote parts of the country, meeting people whose stories have rarely been recorded. Along the way, we encounter the snakes themselves and the very different ways in which people have learned to live alongside them.
The story also raises a bigger question. When an old form of knowledge disappears with the person who carries it, what exactly are we losing?
The series would combine character, discovery, natural history and cultural knowledge, with each person opening the door to another story.
The potential lies in the search itself. We do not know exactly who we will find, what they will know or where the investigation will lead. That gives the series a natural sense of discovery while keeping the focus firmly on real people and their experiences.
The Last Snake Doctor is ultimately a search for people whose knowledge may be disappearing before anyone has properly recorded it.
